Thornton Force is the most striking feature of the Ingleton Waterfalls Walk. The waterfall is on the River Twiss just below Raven Ray. The river's water has come from Kingsdale, a small dale dominated by stunning limestone scenery and looked over by the slopes of Whernside. At Thornton Force, the water has cut deep through carboniferous limestone rocks and dropped onto the sandstone rocks below. Experts believe that the time gap between they laying of these two rock formations is approximately 170 million years.
